Each month of the year is associated with a specific gemstone, known as a birthstone, and is linked to symbolic and mystical meanings. This video shows examples of each birthstone and below we explain their common associations.

January: Garnet

Considered the stone of good luck, regeneration and stability, garnets are also said to protect the wearer from nightmares.

February: Amethyst

Amethyst is a semi-precious gemstone that comes in shades of purple and is often associated with loyalty, wealth and protection.

March: Aquamarine

Aquamarine is a semi-precious gemstone that comes in delicate shades of green-blue. It is said to calm the nerves and is linked to health, affection and love.

April: Diamond

One of the world鈥檚 most sought after gemstones, diamonds signify love, eternity and strength.

May: Emerald

Said to promote healing and enhance love and contentment, emeralds have also been associated with the power of foresight and are one of the world鈥檚 rarest gemstones.

June: Pearl

Pearls are associated with chastity and modesty and said to promote sincerity, truth and loyalty.

July: Ruby

Rubies are a rare and precious red gemstone associated with contentment, peace, friendship, love and vitality.

August: Peridot

As well as being a symbol of purity, the peridot stone is believed to enhance wellness and spirituality.

September: Sapphire

Another rare gemstone, sapphire was once called the stone of destiny as it鈥檚 associated with mental clarity and foresight.

October: Opal

Opals range in many different colours from white and black to blues, greens and browns. They鈥檙e linked to purity, hope and innocence. Tourmaline and Rose Quartz are alternative October birthstones.  

November: Citrine

From the quartz family, citrine is often called the stone of the mind and is known as the lucky merchant stone. Topaz is another November birthstone.

December: Turquoise

Turquoise has long been a popular gemstone, linked to happiness, fortune and luck. Tanzanite and zircon are alternative December birthstones.
